Designing for the reader, not the dashboard

Page views are easy to count and easy to chase. The trouble is that they reward the loudest headline rather than the most useful story.

A healthier approach starts with a handful of signals that map to real reader value: return visits, completion rate and replies.

Measure what you can defend

If you would be embarrassed to explain a metric to a reader, it probably should not drive an editorial decision. Choose numbers that you would happily print on the masthead.

Review them monthly, not daily. The point is direction, not noise.
